Early last year, the U.K. government announced a drastic cut in overseas development funding to compensate for a planned increase in spending on national defense. Aid that included support for health and education in lower income countries would plummet by 40% in 2027, from 0.5% to 0.3% of national income, it said. On the heels of a sudden halt to most foreign aid by the U.S. government, the announcement prompted fears of further harm to vulnerable populations. But U.K. leaders didn’t say how cuts would be distributed, leading to more than a year of uncertainty for countries dependent on the money.

On 16 July, 2026, the U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) finally published its country-by-country funding plans as part of its annual report. African nations shoulder the biggest cuts, with reductions amounting to more than 90% by 2029 for Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya, and Tanzania.
