MDPI, the open-access publisher, has announced the rollout of its in-house AI-powered research integrity screening system, Ethicality. The tool is now used to automatically screen every manuscript submitted to the publisher.

Its implementation marks a significant step forward in MDPI’s commitment to safeguarding the scholarly record, improving editorial efficiency, and supporting editorial decision-making throughout the publication process—from initial submission to the final publication decision. Ethicality currently screens approximately 2,000 manuscript submissions from authors worldwide each day.

The system performs comprehensive research integrity checks, including the detection of plagiarism, data manipulation, inappropriate authorship practices, and other potential breaches of publication ethics.

MDPI emphasizes that Ethicality is not intended to replace editorial judgment, but rather to serve as a decision-support tool. All flagged cases are further assessed by editors and research integrity specialists. This approach combines AI-driven automation with expert human evaluation, strengthening quality control and helping to ensure the integrity of scholarly publications.
