Slasher sequel: Trump again proposes major cuts to U.S. science spending

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. That appears to be the thinking behind the 2027 budget request to Congress that President Donald Trump unveiled on 1 April, 2026. For the second straight year, the White House is asking Congress to make deep cuts to federal research spending, including a 55% cut to the National Science Foundation (NSF), a 23% cut to NASA, a 15% cut to the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Science, and a 12% cut to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The plan also calls for eliminating a host of programs that focus on climate change and the environment, and limiting agency spending on publishing scientific papers and subscribing to journals.
Earlier this year, lawmakers largely rejected similarly steep cuts to science that Trump requested for 2026. But it will be months before it becomes clear whether Congress will resist the new requests for cuts, which would take effect when the 2027 fiscal year begins on 1 October, 2026.
